2024 Week 11: In which I talk about all things ISHMAEL.

Old, battered, torn, faded and falling apart. But, enough about me – check out those covers!

Are you in the same boat? Maybe it’s time your old copy of DCM ISHMAEL was given a face-lift.

Or maybe it’s time you finally bite the bullet, cave into peer group pressure, go against your better judgement, throw caution to the wind, and buy your first copy!

As mentioned in the last blog a NEW edition of DON’T CALL ME ISHMAEL will be released in APRIL and this week I was thrilled to receive a bunch of shiny advance copies. Thank you SCHOLASTIC AUSTRALIA.

The first edition of DCM Ishmael was published way back in 2006 and so to celebrate the latest one (and to encourage everyone to rush out and order the new copy!) I thought I’d have a look back and highlight some things about the novel itself and what it has achieved over the years.

1. The whole story started because of this image of Gregory Peck as Captain Ahab from the film version of Herman Melville’s MOBY DICK. It was on the noticeboard in the study of our previous house. No picture on the board. No Ishmael trilogy. It’s crazy to think of the small things that can lead to a big story.

2. Since the original release in 2006 the Australia/NZ edition has been reprinted 27 times.

3. There have been 4 cover variations.

4. The original Australian cover, as well as the props needed for it, were created and designed by my son Joe. He was in Grade 12 at the time.

5. There have been 7 overseas publications. (There were almost 8. A Turkish publisher bought the rights in 2017 but their edition was never published.)

6. Don’t Call Me Ishmael has been performed as a straight stage play and a musical in Australia and as a stage and radio play in Germany. Ishmael is a best-seller in Germany – thanks to the wonderful Carl Hanser (hardback) dtv (paperback) and Hoercompany (audio) – and has been used in schools there as a class text and also in State exams.

8. In 2010 I was invited to the White Ravens Festival held at the International Youth Library in Blutenburg Castle in Munich. The first two Ishmael books and The Running Man had been published in Germany at the time. As well as presenting at the festival and speaking at a couple of schools, the highlight was getting to perform the songs I’d written for Ishmael and the Return of the Dugongs at a concert in Blutenburg castle with German band Gone Fishin’. They had recorded bits of the songs for the German audio version.

9. Since its publication DCM Ishmael has been short-listed and won a number of awards both here and overseas.

10. As of 2023 DCM Ishmael has sold around 120,000+ copies in Aust/NZ alone. (So if everyone who has ever bought one could please update to a new copy, then I’ll have a big windfall!)

AND JUST TO FINISH UP:

If you want to discover some hidden references and secrets behind DCM Ishmael, then go HERE.

If you want to read more about how Gregory Peck and Herman Melville helped create the Ishmael series, go HERE.

Finally, if you want to discover the secrets of the second and third books of the Ishmael trilogy, then go HERE.

And finally, finally, next blog I’ll have a competition where you will have the chance to win one of the new editions!!!!

As long as you can answer a simple Ishmael related question.

And you live in Australia.

And (in the unlikely event that more than two people respond) you get drawn out of a hat.

Cheers
Michael

2024 Week 10: In which I take a Shelfie.

At present our kitchen is being renovated so while we are spending a lot of our time downstairs in the rumpus room I thought I’d tidy up and rearrange the shelves that hold the various editions of my books. I’m very pleased with the result. Neat!

As well as the Australian and New Zealand copies of my books there are also editions here from the USA, UK, Canada, Singapore, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, South Korea, France, China, Czech Republic, Israel, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Norway, Poland, India and Turkey.

The figurines in front of the Eric Vale books of the characters Eric and Chewy were made by my son Joe who also illustrated the books. (As well as the Secret Agent Derek ‘Danger’ Dale trilogy). He can do pretty much anything!

And in front of the Just a Dog editions are just some Mr Mosely look-alike dogs.

Down the bottom are some videos and the audio recordings of a few of the books – mostly in German.

This week I was also really delighted to attend the launch of Carly Metcalfe’s memoir Breath. She’s an amazing person and her story is inspiring and remarkable. Highly recommended.

My other recents very enjoyable reads were:

In other news the new edition of Don’t Call Me Ishmael comes out in April with a slightly updated cover (on right). Can you spot the changes?

Hopefully I’ll get a box of books soon so I’ll have a couple of the new copies (signed if you like) to give away.

Get your bids in now or it might be time for a competition!

Cheers
Michael

2024 Week 9: Dedicated to the Dedicatees – PART 2.

Back in Week 7 I wrote about the people and stories behind the dedications in my Young Adult or Older Readers books, so now let’s look at my Younger Readers and Picture Books dedications.

JUST A DOG - 2010:

Quite a number of the Mr Mosely stories in Just a Dog are based on real events involving dogs I grew up with, so this dedication is to all the dogs we had as a family over the years.

The two main dogs that I spent most time with and whose stories I drew on, were called Penny and Kim. Penny (below – I think on my first Holy Communion Day) was a cross breed with a bit of Collie in her. She used to wait on the footpath every afternoon for me to come home from primary school and when she saw me at the top of the street she’d come bounding up and jump all over me just like Mr Moe does to Corey in the book. I loved it.

As for Kim, one day she got a fishing hook caught in her jaw (true) that all ended up with me fainting at the Vets (also sadly true). Another story that made it into the book.

The ERIC VALE SERIES

ERIC VALE EPIC FAIL 2012

Both the Eric Vale and Derek ‘Danger’ Dale trilogies were wonderfully illustrated by my son Joe so now you’re getting two dedications for the price of one!

My dedication is to my awesome daughter Meg (below pretending to laugh hysterically at Eric Vale Epic Fail). She was the inspiration behind discovering the character of Eric Vale. One day Meg noticed that I had mistakenly written ‘eric fail’ instead of ‘epic fail’ on a Facebook comment. She said at the time that it sounded like a character from one of my books – Hmmmmmmmm – and the rest is history!

Joe’s dedication is to his amazing partner Rita Artmann who is the other half of ARTSPEAR ENTERTAINMENT.

ERIC VALE OFF THE RAILS 2013

I based Mrs Booth, the librarian in Off The Rails on a friend who is a fantastic school librarian, so I dedicated the story to her and all her colleagues who do such a brilliant and crucial job encouraging a love of reading and stories.

Joe’s dedication is to both sets of grandparents.

ERIC VALE SUPER MALE 2013

Because this story is about Super Heroes and Heroes in general my dedication is to my childhood hero Shintaro from the 60s TV series the Samurai. A few years back I got to meet the actor Koichi Ose who played Shintaro (See below) They say you shouldn’t meet your heroes but its ok when they actually are heroes like this man is.

One of the thrills of my life.

Joe’s dedication speaks for itself 💖.

The SERCET AGENT DEREK ‘DANGER’ DALE SERIES

THE CASE OF ANIMALS BEHAVING REALLY REALLY BADLY – 2014

I visited and gave talks at Padua Jnr College in Brisbane. They had read the Eric Vale books and they were so enthusiastic and friendly that I dedicated the first spin-off to them. They had even created a wall of of Erics! (See below)

In between the first Eric Vale book and this one, Joe and Rita were married hence his dedication to his new wife and in-laws.

THE CASE OF THE REALLY REALLY SCARY THINGS – 2015

Joe’s dedication 💝. Dedicator becomes the Dedicatee!

As for Joe getting the job as illustrator for the Eric and Derek books; he was the author’s son so he had to prove to the naturally very skeptical and wary publishers that he could actually do it. And so he did. Brilliantly.

As I said to my publisher when we discussed illustrations for the books: You could offer me any illustrator in Australia and I still think Joe would do a better job. Having seen the results I stand by that 100%. Despite the implication in Joe’s dedication, it wasn’t me doing him a favour. It was very much the other way around.

THE CASE OF THE REALLY REALLY MAGNETIC MAGNET – 2015

Two dedications in one! To my mother-in-law and Joe’s grandmother Betty who passed away in 2015 before this book was published. Betty, like her husband Ben, was a wonderfully enthusiastic supporter of all the books. She really did like a good joke but could tell an even better one, funny voices and all. Still loved and missed.

YOU TURKEYS!: 2010

Jake and Anna (below) are grandchildren of Keith and Anne who were included in the Don’t Call Me Ishmael dedication. I stole their names for the characters in this book. At the time they were around the same age as the characters. They are now fourteen years older but they’re still characters!

RODNEY LOSES IT! – 2017

When they were little I doubt a day went by when Meg and Joe didn’t draw something. Or more accurately, heaps of things! (See below) We still have boxes filled with their drawings, illustrated stories and cartoons. Under the expert artistic guidance of their beloved Benpa (grandfather Ben) they both became very skilled artists. I’ve already had the absolute joy of creating some books with Joe and hopefully sometime in the not-too-distant future I’ll share that same joy with Meg.

RODNEY FORGETS IT! – 2022

A no-brainer this one. Who better to dedicate a picture book to than your beautiful and brilliant grand children?

Well that’s it so far.

I have two picture books both due for release next year. That will mean two more dedications. But to whom? Maybe one just for Rowen and one just for Harley? Maybe someone entirely different? Maybe a dedication just to me for all my hard work!

I’ll really need to think about it. When it comes to dedications, I’m pretty dedicated to getting them right.

Cheers
Michael

PS: Read any good DEDICATIONS recently?

2024 Week 8: Not the post I promised.

So last week my blog was Dedicated to the Dedicatees – PART 1 where I looked at the people and stories behind the Dedications in my OLDER READERS books and this week was going to be PART 2 where I continued on and covered the YOUNGER READERS and PICTURE BOOK dedications.

CHANGE OF PLAN!

For two reasons. ONE – I forgot one of my Older Readers books that should have been included in PART 1 and TWO – we’ve been away most of the week up in Port Douglas in Far North Queensland and I didn’t have my laptop with me or much time to write.

So what I’ve decided to do is complete the PART1 Dedications and then briefly recap our Pt Douglas trip.

Ok, so the YOUNG ADULT book I left out last week was my most recent one. This one:

THE THINGS THAT WILL NOT STAND -2018

Of all my Dedications this is the only one not directed at anyone in particular. The ‘Dudeists’ is a reference to the one of my favourite films The Big Lebowski which stars Jeff Bridges as The Dude. The film itself is mentioned in the story and quite central to it and the title of my book is taken from a line in the movie where the Dude character says, ‘This aggression will not stand man.’

I always say that every story has to find its ‘tribe’. I like to think that this story’s tribe is filled with hopeless (and hopeful) romantics like me and quiet heroes with good hearts. This novel is also a personal favourite. It is a love letter to my University days and the hopes and possibilities that lurked around every corner.

There, that’s done. Now briefly, our five days in Port Douglas, 66 km north of CAIRNS.

We took the SKYRAIL up to KURANDA and back on a damp and misty day.

We saw beautiful beaches (Four Mile Beach) and amazing rainforests (Mossman Gorge).

Back at the resort we relaxed, went swimming and my wife beat me at table tennis and darts. I was going to try billiards but decided against it, because you know, it’s not a competition.

We got up close and personal with lots of wildlife (Wildlife Habitat Pt Douglas).

I even spotted a couple of RODNEYS in the wild at Cairns airport lounge!

And there was much more. All in all a great 5 days.

Next week DEDICATED TO THE DEDICATEES – PART 2. I promise.

Cheers
Michael
